NIF Academy

An 8-week first-principles curriculum on the National Ignition Facility, built for an engineer with fluid-systems intuition.

Every week pairs a NIF subsystem with the master equation that governs it, anchored to a fluid-system analogy you already know. Photons become mass flux. The B-integral becomes accumulated head loss. The plasma critical density becomes choked flow at Mach 1. The ablative implosion becomes a rocket equation. By Week 8 you can write the end-to-end energy budget from first principles and defend any sustainment trade-off in physics terms.

How to use this site

  1. Work the weeks in order. Each is ~5–7 hours. Don't skip Week 0; it's the bridge from fluid thinking to field thinking and makes the rest tractable.
  2. The right drawer is your scratchpad. Tools (JupyterLite REPL, spreadsheet) and the NIF system browser slide in from the right. Use them while reading — every calculation in the curriculum is meant to be run.
  3. Every equation has a fluid analog. Look for the blue analogy callouts in each lesson. They are the load-bearing pedagogy.
  4. Self-check at the end. If you can answer the self-check from memory without re-reading, move on. If not, re-read the marked section and try again.
